Nobody outside Greenbrier gave the Bobcats a chance on Friday night in Nashville, and Pearl-Cohn spent the evening making sure that judgment looked correct. The Firebirds rolled to a 54-12 win, their fourth straight victory, and they keep looking more like the class of Region 6-4A every week.
The Predictions Were Right
This one played out the way the predictions said it would. Many local writers picked Pearl-Cohn for a big win earlier in the week, and Friday night delivered exactly that. Funk found the end zone four times as the Firebird offense did what it has done for a month now: score early, score often, and leave no doubt. Pearl-Cohn is 5-3 now and sitting at No. 10 in the Nashville Super 25, and nothing about Friday night suggested that ranking is too high.
The Numbers Tell It Straight
For Greenbrier, the story of the night was the story of the season. The Bobcats fall to 1-6, and the numbers tell it straight. Through seven games Greenbrier has been outscored 254-113, a minus-141 differential. The defense has now allowed 30 or more points in six of seven games. The offense has been held to 15 or fewer in five of seven. The lone win, 35-28 at Portland back on September 18, keeps looking more like the exception that proves the rule.
Measuring the Gap
There is no shame in losing to this Pearl-Cohn team. The Firebirds have won four straight, they look like the team to beat in Region 6-4A, and last year they hung 55 on Greenbrier in a shutout. But honest accounting says the gap between these programs right now is wide, and Friday night measured it at 42 points.
What the Final Stretch Can Decide
The schedule offers a breather before the next test. Greenbrier is off next week, then travels to Springfield on October 23 for the Battle for the Pitt-Carroll Trophy, with the season finale at West Creek on October 29. At 0-3 in region play the playoff math is bleak, and nobody should pretend otherwise. What the final stretch can still decide is simpler and maybe more important: whether this team finds something to build on.
Back to Basics
That starts with the basics. The Bobcats have to be better defensively than they were Friday night, when Pearl-Cohn scored just about whenever it wanted. They have to find some consistency on offense, where sustained drives have been rare all season. And they have to play the kind of desperate, nothing-to-lose football that nearly stole last week's White House game, when Greenbrier battled back to tie it 13-13 in the second quarter before falling 32-19.
Springfield will not be any kinder than Pearl-Cohn was. But rivalry games have a way of ignoring records, and the Bobcats have two weeks to get healthy and get right. Friday night in Nashville was a measuring stick. The measurement was not flattering. What matters now is what Greenbrier does with it.
